KENWOOD NEXEDGE Type-D trunking employs a Distributed Logic based architecture where no control channel is required, and all channels available in the system can operate as traffic channels.
Type-D trunking offers a cost-effective, spectrum-efficient on-site radio communication system for users migrating from analogue conventional operation. The trunking capability is enabled by the home repeater assigned to each radio which maximises system capacity and availability in single site operations.
In addition, the 6.25kHz NXDN digital protocol inherently offers a lower Bit Error Rate to extend the effective coverage area by up to 30% - which means that fewer repeaters are required to provide the same coverage and consequently, reduced equipment and licensing costs.
NXDNTM TYPE-D Overview
NXDNTM TYPE-D Trunking Key Features & Benefits
Low Equipment Cost: |
Low tier NX-1000 Series radios can be employed in NEXEDGE Type-D trunking, greatly reducing the cost of devices that can be used in a system.
|
Minimal Investment: |
Type-D Single Site Trunking can be enabled by simply purchasing a KENWOOD Trunking License (KWD-1202TD) and Repeater License (KWD- 10DTR) without the need to make any changes to existing NXR-710/810 repeater hardware.
|
No Sites Controllers: |
The trunking capability is developed at software level using KPG-D6 programming, which eliminates the need for dedicated control hardware.
|
No Control Cannel: |
Operates in a similar fashion to analogue Logic Trunked Radio (LTR) where each repeater acts as its own controller and all of these controllers are coordinated together.
|
Security: |
ESN Validation for security feature for each subscribed NEXEDGE NXDN ensures each radio is validated for trunked system access. In the event a radio is lost, stolen, or compromised, disabling the ESN will deny access while all other radios continue to communicate in their talk groups without disruption.
|
Rich Feature Set: |
Includes: Group Call, Individual Call, Paging Call, Status and Data Messages, Remote Stun/Revive/Kill, Late Entry, Over-the-Air Alias (OAA)
|
Coverage: |
Extended coverage and spectrum efficiency is achieved through the use Very Narrow 6.25kHz bandwidth 6.25kHz NXDN Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) channel access method.
|
Configuration: |
Type-D Trunking single site trunked operation.
|
Capacity: |
30-Channels

How TYPE-D Trunking Works
Extended Coverage with Reduced Costs
Because an RF signal weakens with distance, analog reception becomes increasingly noisy and intermittent. The low BER of KENWOOD NEXEDGE NXDN improves reception in fringe areas, thereby effectively increasing range by as much as 20% over FM analogue, resulting in a 50% increase in coverage area for digital 6.25 kHz.
When compared to digital 12.5 kHz bandwidth operation, the narrower 6.25 kHz bandwidth results in superior clarity over a 30% wider coverage area and requires fewer repeaters.
